Your hands are one of the most complex parts of your body. The bones, tendons, muscles, joints and nerves of the hands are crucial for almost every aspect of daily living. Hand injuries and disorders can cause pain, loss of sensation, loss of movement, impaired functions, loss of productivity and reduced quality of life.

Why See a Hand Surgeon?

If you experience pain in your fingers, hands, wrists or arms, one of our experienced hand doctors may be able to help. While hand surgery may be a consideration, nonsurgical treatments, such as physical and occupational therapy, are also options that can help to restore movement and reduce or eliminate your pain.

Conditions treated by an orthopedic hand specialist can include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome — treatment relieves pain, numbness and tingling in the hand and arm
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome — treatment relieves numbness or tingling in the ring and small fingers, pain in the forearm and/or weakness in the hand
  • Sports injuries to the hand or wrist
  • Trigger finger — treatment relieves pain, stiffness and a sensation of locking or catching when you bend and straighten your finger
  • Wrist pain

Types of Hand Surgery

Depending on your particular type of injury or underlying problem, it may be determined that surgery is the best option. An orthopedic hand surgeon may perform several types of surgical hand procedures, including:

  • Fracture repair to fix bones in the hand or fingers
  • Joint replacement, also called arthroplasty, in people with severe arthritis of the hand
  • Nerve repair
  • Surgical drainage to remove a collection of pus if there is an abscess in the hand
  • Tendon repair

If you experience pain, numbness or other problems with your hand, it’s important you seek help soon.

Orthopedic Wrist Care

Everyday activities suffer a setback when you’re dealing with wrist pain. Our orthopedic wrist specialists are dedicated to providing quality, compassionate care as they treat a wide variety of wrist pain.

Orthopedic wrist surgeons are capable of providing wrist pain treatment for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendinitis
  • Wrist injuries

Wrist specialists will work with you to find the most effective treatment for your needs.

Wrist Pain Treatment Options

Orthopedic wrist doctors can offer several forms of wrist pain treatment. Sometimes, rest, over-the-counter medication or a wrist brace is all that is necessary to treat your wrist pain. However, if these methods do not help, your orthopedic specialist may recommend other forms of treatment, such as cortisone shots, physical therapy or wrist surgery.

Wrist Pain Surgical Treatment

While conservative wrist treatment is always preferred, surgical treatment is sometimes necessary.

If your wrist surgeon suspects the problem is based in your joint, he or she may perform a wrist arthroscopy to diagnose and treat the issue. This minimally invasive surgery allows the wrist surgeon to see inside the joint without making large incisions. During arthroscopy, minor damage to the joint can be repaired without the need for a full, open surgical procedure.

If your wrist is severely damaged, or if your wrist pain has not responded to other forms of treatment, your wrist surgeon may recommend wrist replacement surgery to replace the worn-out joint.

If wrist pain limits your activities, contact our orthopedic wrist specialists to schedule an appointment. Call 480-558-3744 to make an appointment.

Arm Injuries and Pain

Your arms are anatomically complex — containing three bones and many muscles, joints, tendons and connective tissues. It takes all these components to keep the shoulder, elbow and wrist functioning optimally. But all of these parts are susceptible to injury, and when an injury occurs, it can be debilitating.

Fortunately, no matter what type of arm injury or condition you face, our arm doctors have the expertise and specialized knowledge you need. Whether you need basic conservative treatment to manage a minor injury or inflammation or more complex elbow surgery to correct an overuse injury, our orthopedic arm surgeons may be able to help.

Our team of orthopedic specialists can help treat:

  • Bursitis
  • Dislocations
  • Fractures
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • MCL injuries
  • Nerve issues
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff tears or injury
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Tendinitis
  • Tennis elbow

Arm Specialists

Whether your discomfort and other symptoms are the result of an acute injury or something that’s chronic, specialty care is available. We provide a spectrum of care for injuries and conditions affecting the arms, including the shoulders and the elbows.

In many cases, a combination of at-home care, over-the-counter and prescription pain medications, injectable medications, behavioral modifications and physical therapy can help resolve arm discomfort and other symptoms.

But when conservative treatment methods aren’t enough, we also offer a range of surgical treatment options, includingulnar nerve surgery, UCL reconstruction (also known as Tommy John surgery) and golfer’s elbow treatment, among others.

Following surgical treatment, our clinical team can help guide you through the recovery process, providing individualized care plans that will include physical and occupational therapy to help you return to your full range of daily activities.

Your first step toward relief is to talk with an arm doctor or elbow specialist, who can help you gather the facts and make a decision about the type of treatment that’s best for you. Call 480-558-3744 to schedule an appointment.
